Why Water Damage Can't Wait

It's 2am, and you wake up to the sound of water splashing. Uh-oh. A collection of scenarios runs through your mind and you rank each silently from awful to more awful. Well, it could be your 3 year-old woke up and decided to brush his teeth. That's not great, but it's probably a much more desireable scenario than a busted water heater or an overflowing toilet. Oh no. It's overflowing toilet. And you're barefoot. After you stop the water running and mop up the six or so inches of water that has spilled all over your bathroom floor and onto your bedroom carpet, you soak your feet in bleach and weigh out your options. It's 2am and you want to go back to sleep. That 3 year-old will be up at 7 wanting breakfast and cartoons, and you need your beauty sleep. The carpet is only MARGINALLY damp, and you're pretty sure the water was only running for maybe an hour or so before you woke up. It's probably fine, right?

Well, it's probably not. See, that water spilled out for a while, and it collected in all the corners and crevices of your bathroom, and then it flowed out into your bedroom. Here it soaked in the carpet and pooled up next to the walls. The drywall (sheet rock) on your walls is like a sponge, and it soaks that water right up. The carpet is wet, but so is the padding and the flooring underneath. If the water is not dried within 72 hours, mold begins to grow. And mold is VERY unhealthy for you and your family.

You may be thinking that it's all going to have to be replaced anyway, so why not get some sleep. What you need to know is that if the area is dried out quickly, you may not have to replace anything. It is possible to completely dry everything -- floors, walls, carpet -- completely and not have to replace any existing structures.
